EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE – Dr. DEENA HINSHAW

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being so humble, disciplined, and updating and educating us with pertinent and timely information, on a daily basis.

You worked tirelessly to flatten the curve in this City. With such ease and eloquence. Thank you.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw [“Hinshaw”]is Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, a role she assumed on January 28, 2019.

Hinshaw has a decorated resume including:

  • Working as a Medical Officer of Health in the Central Zone of Alberta Health Services from January 2010 to July 2017;
  • Serving as the Medical Officer of Health lead in the area of public health surveillance and infrastructure for Alberta Health Services from 2014 to 2017.
  • Serving as the deputy chief medical officer of health from 2017 to 2019.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw completed her undergraduate degree at Augustana University College in Camrose, Alberta. She completed her medical degree, Masters in Public Health and residencies in family medicine and community medicine at the University of Alberta.

Since the beginnings of COVID-19, Hinshaw has been on a strict schedule. Waking as early as 5 a.m. each day, Hinshaw would be a part of ongoing meetings and planning sessions on initiatives such as flattening the curve and new health measures in Alberta. The public became familiar with Hinshaw through her daily 3:30 pm press briefings, where they tuned eagerly to digest the latest health statistics.

After the media showings, Hinshaw would refocus on policy work, reviewing the documents and guidelines, and analyzing the various scenarios and implications of the health measures that were being proposed. After all this, the tireless mother of two would still ensure to be there for her school-aged children before they went to bed.

In the face of the pandemic storm, Hinshaw was as calm and collected as ever, leading us through these challenging times and to the other side.
