Youth Matters

The Youth Criminal Justice Act Canlii – currently governs proceedings against young persons. The act recognizes that parents should be involved in the process of any proceedings rendered against their children.

If charged with less serious offences, youth may be eligible for Extra Judicial Measures – Extrajudicial Sanctions program, and upon completion of conditions imposed, any of the original charges will be withdrawn. In many centres a community youth justice committee may supervise youth eligible for these programs.

Another program available to youth is the Mental Health Diversion Program. A young person may be eligible if they have a mental health issue that they are currently dealing with.

If the offence does result in a criminal record, your youth criminal record will be sealed either 3 or 5 years after the completion of the sentence related to your charge.
