The Alberta Human Rights Act [“AHRA”] protects Albertans from discrimination in certain areas based on specific grounds.
The purpose of the AHRA is to ensure that all Albertans are offered an equal opportunity to earn a living without discrimination.
The protected rights under section 7 of the AHRA include:

- Gender expression
- Physical disability
- Mental disability
- Place of origin
- Marital status
- Source of income
- Family status
- Sexual Orientation
Further section 6 of the AHRA addresses equal pay where employees of both sexes perform the same or substantially similar work for an employer. Substantive progress is being made in rectifying this aspect of discrimination in today’s world, but there are still material gaps that need to be addressed.
